Kandelia candle

Plant | Rhizophoraceae
Kandelia obovata

Characteristics

The Kandelia candle is a small, evergreen tree and is widespread among the intertidal zones in tropical and subtropical areas. It has oval-shaped leaves and red flower buds with five white petals. Its largest feature is its pen-shaped viviparous plantlets. The smooth, green plantlets remain attached to the mother plant until around April when they disconnect the mother plant and drop onto the beach where they start to grow. The Kandelia candle population in Gaomei Wetlands was initially introduced rather than being native to the region and naturally distributed.

Distribution

The Kandelia candle grows in the core area of Gaomei Wetlands beside the Gaomei I and Fanziliao Levees.
